As 2008 is slowly moving toward its end, we start taking a look at the most pirated titles in various categories. First up are games. As expected, Spore is by far the most downloaded game on.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 was the most pirated game of 2009 according to BitTorrent tracking statistics, Gamasutra reports.
If a pirated copy is detected, the in-game camera wobbles around wildly after a few minutes of play. Bonus points for any gamer that can get Niko drunk in game with this screen wobble on and still. For the Xbox 360, 'Dante's Inferno' was the most the pirated game with 1,280,000 flying through BitTorrent. And 'Super Mario Galaxy 2' was the most illegally downloaded game for the Wii. The most pirated video game goes to COD black ops with over 4.1 million downloads. Another example of a highly pirated game was Spore, because players hated the securom DRM that required you to be connected to the internet. Of those downloads 4.1m were of the PC version whilst 970k were of the Xbox 360 version. The PS3 remains piracy free for the time being.
An interesting thought to stem from the numbers is that of the detrimental effect piracy has on sales. Modern Warfare 2 has broken every sales record around in its short time on the market, and it has done so despite the high level of piracy.
Is that evidence that games piracy is not directly related to lost sales? Expect that debate to rattle on.
