Paint brushes can be found via Random Events, won in contests or games, or purchased in shops. If you want to change ONLY the color of you Neopet (not its species), then you need to put the paint brush in your inventory and go to the Rainbow Pool, at which point you can use the paint brush to paint your Neopet. To get an 8-bit style neopet, you will need access to the Secret Lab Ray or an 8-bit Powerup Potion. The colour is not available from a Fountain Faerie Quest. 8-Bit style petpets are only available from the Petpet Lab Ray and an 8-bit Power-Up Potion. 9 year old me is SCREAMING. What is it?The SunnyNeo Rainbow Pool is an expanded version of the Neopets Rainbow Pool. While the Neopets Rainbow Pool only shows images of converted pets, our rainbow pool offers more.
On each pet it will show you the date is was released and how you can obtain this specific pet-colour combination. Also you can see all facial expressions of all pets, such as happy, sad and angry. In addition to that you can also see how a pet will look without clothes, as well as which clothes are available (if any). As male and female pets look slightly different, for both gender types you can see all facial expressions. This rainbow pool also shows you what an unconverted pet looks like in this colour combination if it is available. On all older pets, you can also see what they looked like before customisation was invented.
How does it work?
Below you can see two dropdown boxes, one that says All Species, and one that says All Colours. You can use these two to find a specific pet-colour combination, by setting both. If you only set one of both, for instance Biscuit, you will see all available Biscuit pets. Similarly if you set the All Species dropdown to Kougra, you will see all available Kougra colours. Once you've found the pet of your choice you can click on it for more detailed information.

A paint brush is a special type of item that can be used to change the colour of a Neopet or Petpet. The first paint brushes were released on May 9, 2000. Within the Neopets community, the act of using a paint brush is called 'painting'. The colour that a Neopet or Petpet becomes after painting depends on which paint brush is used. For example, a Blue Paint Brush will change the colour of a Neopet to Blue, while a Scritchy Sketchy Paint Brush will change the colour of a Neopet to Sketch. Paint brushes disappear after they are used and, as such, each paint brush can only be used once.
Paint brushes are broadly divided into two groups: those that can be used to paint Neopets and those that can be used to paint Petpets. These groups are mutually exclusive; paint brushes intended for Neopets cannot be used on Petpets, and paint brushes intended for Petpets cannot be used on Neopets. Users can determine which group a paint brush belongs to by examining the name of the paint brush. If the paint brush's name contains the word 'Petpet', then it can only be used on Petpets. If the paint brush's name does not contain the word 'Petpet', then it can only be used on Neopets.
Obtaining a paint brush[edit]
With the exception of a few select paint brushes that are sold at the Hidden Tower, paint brushes cannot be purchase from official Neopian shops. Instead, users must obtain paint brushes by winning them from certain games of chance, such as the Fruit Machine and the Alien Aisha Vending Machine, or by receiving them as part of a Random Event. Paint brushes are also sometimes available as prizes for participating in plots or winning certain contests. On top of that, the Advent Calendar has been known to occasionally give out paint brushes. Users also have a small chance of receiving a paint brush when they redeem a gold key in Key Quest.
Excluding the four starter paint brushes that are included inside of newbie packs, all paint brushes are tradable. This means that paint brushes can be purchased from other users using the Auction House, the Trading Post, or user shops. Because the demand for paint brushes within the Neopets economy is so high, users can often sell their paint brushes for tens of thousands or even millions of neopoints.

Using a paint brush[edit]
To use a paint brush on a Neopet, the user must place the paint brush in their inventory and then travel to the Rainbow Pool. At the Rainbow Pool, the user will be shown a picture of each of their Neopets. If the paint brush in the user's inventory can be used on one of displayed Neopets, then a drop down list containing the name of the paint brush will appear below that Neopet. The user must select the paint brush from this drop down box and then click the Submit button to use the paint brush.
To use a paint brush on a Petpet, the user must first attach the Petpet to one of their Neopets. Next, the user must place the paint brush in their inventory and then travel to the Petpet Puddle. At the Petpet Puddle, the user will be shown a picture of each Petpet that is attached to one of their Neopets. If the paint brush in the user's inventory can be used on one of displayed Petpets, then a drop down list containing the name of the paint brush will appear below that Petpet. The user must select the paint brush from this drop down box and then click the Paint this Petpet! button to use the paint brush. Petpets that have been zapped by the Petpet Lab Ray cannot be painted.

Trivia[edit]
- In 2002, during the month of May, TNT held a paint brush competition and let users vote on which paint brush they would like to see next. During the first round of this competition, users could vote for one of three new paint brushes: the Baby Paint Brush, the Tartan Paint Brush, or Mystery Island Paint Brush. The Baby Paint Brush received the most votes during this round and was declared the winner on May 15, 2002. During the second round, users could choose between the Tartan Paint Brush, the Mystery Island Paint Brush, and the Pirate Paint Brush. On May 21, 2002, the Pirate Paint Brush was declared the winner after receiving 194,375 votes. Even though the Mystery Island Paint Brush lost both rounds of the paint brush competition, it would still be revamped and released on June 27, 2002.
- There are three colours only available by using a Paint Brush: Royal, Usuki, and Quiguki. These colours are not available through the Rainbow Fountain or the Lab Ray.
- Interestingly, many colours that Neopets can only obtain by using the Lab Ray or the Rainbow Fountain, such as Robot or Clay, are available to Petpets by using paint brushes.
